In India, significant developments in the use of computers have taken place in the industrial and the commercial sectors. Computers have wide application in these fields. The computer, with its versatility, accelerates one's ability to solve many problems related to teaching, research and administration that are encountered in higher education. One of the foremost formal courses for computer science in the country was started by the Indian Statistical Institute in 1962. In the late 60's IIT 's (Bombay and Madras) introduced computer courses as elective under electrical engineering. Till early 70s computer courses were offered as a part of an engineering curriculum. Late it was imparted as a specialization course in only national institutions like IIT's, and IISREC, that too in limited areas, computer hardware and software. In the 80s, courses on computer science, engineering and applications were introduced in several universities and institution with the encouragement and support of the central and state governments. There are more than 300 degree level colleges in the north eastern region, where BCA Course and MCA Programs and other computer courses can be started in order to generate manpower of professional level for joining IT-enabled services and also undertaking higher education.
